ISO 55000 explained: what it asks for and how to get started

ISO 55000 is the international family of standards for asset management. It does not tell you which software to buy or how often to service a pump. It asks something more basic: are your asset decisions linked to what the organisation is trying to achieve?

ISO 55000 explained: what it asks for and how to get started

The family of standards

  • ISO 55000 gives the overview, principles and vocabulary.
  • ISO 55001 sets out the requirements for an asset management system, and is the one organisations certify against.
  • ISO 55002 gives guidance on how to apply ISO 55001.

The standards were first published in 2014 and have since been revised. Always check the current editions before planning certification.

What the standard really asks for

  1. Line of sight

Asset decisions should support the organisation’s objectives, from the board to the field.

  2. A plan

A strategic asset management plan and asset management plans that say what will be done and why.

  3. Risk-based decisions

Choices about maintenance and investment based on risk, cost and performance over the asset’s life.

  4. Good information

Reliable data about what you own, its condition and its cost.

  5. Continual improvement

    Measuring results, learning and improving.

Practical first steps

  1. Get leadership on board

Asset management is a management system, not a maintenance project.

  2. Run a gap assessment

Compare current practice with the requirements and agree priorities.

  3. Fix the register

You cannot manage risk or lifecycle cost without knowing what you own.

  4. Rank criticality

Focus effort on the assets that matter most.

  5. Measure

Agree a small set of KPIs linked to objectives.

Where software fits

A standard does not require a particular system, but it is very hard to show line of sight, risk-based decisions and reliable information when data is spread across spreadsheets. One platform that holds the register, condition, work, cost and risk makes the evidence easy to produce.

How Mintema helps

Mintema brings the asset register, inspections, work orders, costs, risk and dashboards together on one data model, with a full audit trail. That gives you the information and the evidence an asset management system needs, from the field to the board.
